The Gaylord Automatic X2000 bed cover comes safely packaged as one unit with everything except for the hinge side rail brackets and wiring harness attached. |
This X2000 is designed for smooth tailgates. If the truck has the factory plastic step wing protector on the tailgate, it must be removed. |
With all of the bolts removed, the protector cap comes right off. |
A factory smooth tailgate protector is installed in place of the step wing style one removed. |
The only equipment not attached to the lid is the side plate assemblies for the hinges, the wire harness extension and the key remotes which are packaged separately in the shipping container. |
First step is to install the X2000 bed rail support brackets. Both supports should be pushed all the way forward to where they touch the bed header panel. |
Install the rectangle shaped rear braces behind the bed rail lip and the hinge brace. Two per side will be used, one for the middle bolt and one for the rear bolt. On applications other than 2007 Chevy trucks, a front bolt and clamp brace is used. |
Tighten the center bolt to lightly secure the clamp and brace to the rail. Do not tighten as the brace will have to be able to move when aligning the lid in later steps. |
Install the rear bolt and clamp system. Like the center bolt, do not over tighten the clamp since it will need to be able to shift during alignment. |
Adjustable kick stands are provided and must be installed. One per side is installed in the lower center holes of the side braces. |
The kickstands can be adjusted by turning them after the lid has been installed to keep the hinge assemblies lined up straight with the bed sides. |
Remove the X2000 hinge from the lid and install them into the side braces. There is a small lip at the front of the brace. The hinge must be slide forward under this small brace. |
Install the locking pin from under the side brace and into the hinge assembly. |
It will take at least two people to lift the X2000 lid safely onto the truck. The linear actuators are attached to the lid so care must be taken when installing the lid so as not to damage the actuators or the truck. |
Carefully place the lid onto the truck while holding the linear actuators inboard to prevent any damage. |
Install the nuts onto the lid hinge studs and leave loose so the lid can be shifted from side to side during alignment. Once the alignment is finalized, the nuts must be tightened down permanently before removing the lid for further adjustments. |
Close the tailgate and let the lid down. Check the fit all the way around the bed to center the lid on the bed. Check the front to make sure the lid doesn't contact the cab. Check the tailgate area and make sure the lid and open and close easily yet have a snug fit around the shape of the bed and tailgate. |
When the proper placement has been determined, permanently tighten the rear brace bolt to secure the braces to the bed. The middle bolt will be tightened once the lid is lifted back off since it can't be reached because the hinge is in the way. |
Remove the hinge locking pin that secures the hinge assembly to the brace base. |
The lid is now carefully lifted back off the truck with the hinges attached to the lid. |
Carefully place the lid right side up on a sturdy table or stands. Don't lay it on the ground as you will need to access the hinge assembly in its natural position. |
Install the provided hardware through what Gaylords calls the 'anti-squish' hinge that is attached to the actuator and secure it to the X2000 hinge base. This square-shaped hinge bracket is what allows the hinge system to sense resistance during closing so you can't catch your arm or hand in between the lid and bed when closing. |
|
Before re-installing the lid, permanently tighten the middle bolt that as not accessible with the hinge assembly installed. |
Carry the lid back over to the truck and once again carefully install it onto the bed. A tip to make the job easier is to tilt the front downward a little while moving it forward to help guide the hinges into the brace brackets and get the front toe edge of the hinge base to slide under and into the small clamp lip at the front of the brace. |
While holding the lid up, have someone push the front seal gasket forward and over the header panel. |
Install the rear locking pin to secure the hinge assembly to the base. |
When the hinge base is properly inserted into the front clamp and secured with the rear locking pin, the lid will stay open. This is shot also shows the heart and soul of the Automatic X2000 system. |
Locate the provided wire harness extension. |
The ends with the appropriate connectors are plugged into their respective receiving connectors. |
As a good safety precaution and to make the job a little easier to route the wires through the frame to the engine compartment, the entire length of the harness extension is wrapped with electrical tape. |
The easiest way to get the wire harness to the battery is to route the wires down behind the cab and along the frame then up to the battery. Be sure to secure the wire along the way with tie wraps. |
Use the factory ground and power posts in the engine compartment to power the lid. |
Drum roll please! Now comes the fun part. Using the remote control push the lower button on the key remote to lower the lid. Do it slowly the first time to make sure the lid didn't lose alignment during installation. |
There are two electronic slam latches, one on each side which provides maximum locking security when the lid is closed. With the lid closed, mark the center of the latch so the striker brackets can be properly positioned on the bed rail lip. |
When the proper position has been determined, install and tighten all of the striker plate hardware. |
|
Lower the lid using the remote control and the latches should firmly grab the striker brackets. These latches are controlled by the remote control and software. In the event of power loss the traditional keyways on the lid can be turned to manually unlock the latches. |
And there you have it, a great looking lid with complete luxury ergonomics that truly turned the bed of Ranch Muffler's '07 Silverado into a locking trunk! |
